Approaches to the Blank Page – Saturday 16th September 2023, 11am – 1.30pm GMT (2.5hrs)
Are you struggling with your writing, or wanting to write but don’t know where to start? This Masterclass will consider the blocks that get in the way of our own creativity and consider our relationship to language which is at the heart of the work all writers do. How to we tap into the subjects that are right for us? How do we know which project to pursue? And how to we get out of our own way so that we can write fluently about the subjects that will inspire and satisfy us? Offering some practical advice, close reading, and an opportunity to try some exercises this workshop will help to refresh and renew your practice, whether fiction or non-fiction and if you’re starting out encourage you to get going.
Who is My Reader? – Saturday 14th October 2023, 11am – 1.30pm GMT (2.5hrs)
All writers want a reader, an ideal person who will read our work with sympathy and understanding and maybe even award us a prize . . . but who is this projected figure and how can a better understanding of this person help us to write better? How can we develop our own reading practise to become better readers of our own work, and the work of others? What does it mean to read as a writer? Whether you’re working in fiction or non-fiction, this workshop will offer some practical advice, close reading, and an opportunity to try some exercises. The workshop will help you to think about your reader and develop your work towards an audience, even if it’s only yourself.
Structure and Technique – Saturday 18th November, 11am – 1.30pm GMT (2.5hrs)
All pieces of writing need a shape or some kind of organising principle to contain the ideas. But how do we know which form works best for our work, our voice, and particularly for the story we’re telling? How does content dictate form and vice versa? What can we learn from other writers about form and the principles of good story structure? Do we need a form before we set out or does one become evident along the way? Whether you’re working in fiction or non-fiction, this workshop will offer practical advice, close reading, and an opportunity to try some exercises, and will help you to think about techniques for structuring your work.
These sessions will be a mixture of exercise, example, and discussion.
