Online Writing Course

Live Online: The art of the audio monologue: a guide for writers

Online //

14th November
7pm (UTC+0)

From Alan Bennett’s acclaimed Talking Heads series to a multitude of famous speeches in stage plays, films and radio dramas, monologues can be part of a wider production or tell entire stories on their own. In this workshop, audio producer Chris Gregory discusses how to write them, with an eye and ear on performance.

Writing and performing monologues are great tests for both writers and actors. In this workshop we look at the art of writing, performing and recording audio monologues. Throughout, we’ll listen to examples of monologues from Alternative Stories actors and elsewhere). We’ll cover the following topics:

• What is a monologue?

• How will writing monologues help your writing in general?

• Knowing your character – who is speaking your monologue?

• What is the story your monologue is telling?

• Optimising your monologue for performance

• An introduction to performing monologues

• Recording your monologue

• Telling entire stories through monologues or monologue series (the one-person audio play)

• Questions and Answers
